My work broadly focuses on the intersections between theatre, performance, literature, visual art, film, music, dance and physical culture in the long twentieth and twenty-first centuries. I am interested in bodies and the way they interact on the stage, the pitch and in everyday life. I also have a developing fascination with the health and wellbeing of these bodies, particularly in light of the history of strength training and fitness.
I am the author of three monographs (British Avant-Garde Performance; Modernist and Avant-Garde Performance: an introduction and Migrating Modernist Performance: British theatrical travels through Russia), co-editor of Performance and Professional Wrestling, and have published in numerous journals including Modernism/modernity, Modernist Cultures, Comparative Drama, Theatre Survey, Modern Drama and New Theatre Quarterly. I particularly enjoy presenting my work at conferences across the world including, most recently, in Columbus OH, Munster, Boston, New Orleans, Seattle, Las Vegas, Pasadena and Rennes.
I am committed to making academia more accessible, whether through my termly teaching commitments, my publications or through public engagement events.
